Should Marijuana Be Legalized Nationwide? (U.S.A.)
Legalizing marijuana nationwide is a very hot topic in the United States right now. There are many reasons both why and why not to do this. Lets do some comparing and i want everyone’s thoughts on this one.
A recent poll on reddit.com announced that 52% of people said that pot should be legalized nationwide here in America. I’ve spoken to many people about the subject, and have found that around 60% feel the same way. If we could just eliminate congress’ bills and and lawmaking system this whole ordeal could be less contravesial. America could get back to worrying about healthcare reform, this recession, global warming, and the war in Iraq if we just be a “real” democracy and put legalizing weed to a national vote. I feel that if this passed, America would be a better place because crime would go down due to the 829,625 arrests in ‘07 that would ultimately be not happening in general. In 2006, about 68% of all murders, 42% of all robberies, and 22% of all aggravated assaults that were reported to the police were committed with a firearm. This is way more important than dealing with pot-smokers. Now i am not saying anything else should be legal but if we could just open the minds of the American government, and get this over with already, the focus could be turned to the violent crimes. Smoking weed makes people calm and relaxed, almost as if it puts people in a “happy place”. What do people do wrong when they’re high? They act silly and laugh. The reports of being paranoid however, are mostly because people are worried about getting caught by the police. Now i also think that since Salvia Divinourm can be legal when it’s a hallucinigen, then weed should be no problem. Weed is natural, an herb. Once again, if legalized that would come to a screaming hault. and as for driving under the influence, I am totally against that and think that we should do the same as we do with drinking. America should legalize and regulate marijuana by setting the age limit at 18. Drinking should also be set at 18, even though drinking is way worse for you. It gets you fat, sloppy, and impaired more heavily than weed does. While weed actually boosts metabolism but thats a whole different post. As for the idea of regulation goes, I think there should be no limit on the amount being held. There should also be no taxes either, and for good reason. Yes the government could make profit from it, but with the crime going down they wouldn’t need it as much. Also with everone being a little happier, then maybe violent crime would go down as well. Overall I beleive that this is a great idea, and i hope to see pot legal at least in New York since I live here, within a year since it’s already being talked about.
